Welcome to Green Flow Ence!

Welcome to Issue #1 of the Green Flow Ence newsletter!

There’s never been a better time to be in sustainability, but let’s face it, it can be a confusing space 🤔 Don’t worry we gotchu, in our newsletter you’ll get the latest news and Greenfluencer goodies, delivered straight to your inbox on a regular basis !

For us, sustainability revolves around how we live on our planet and occupy resources that benefit ourselves and the world. But from Greenfluence’s perspective, sustainability is all about how we want to share our passion for the natural environment and how it links to our daily lives with the people around us.

Our journey began during lockdown in 2021, when Maya and Vis saw the need to start a project that went beyond just climate change, to how sustainability affected various aspects of our lives, including the exciting ESG space! Our first podcast (after countless edits) was released that month… Fast forward to this day, we are beyond proud to have released over 30 episodes, built a dedicated team, expanded into online education programs and created our own Slack community of Greenfluencers!

We believe there is an untapped opportunity to educate young people about sustainability and importantly help them build careers in the space. We’re constantly striving to improve and want to hear your voice and know what you are after, so if you want to be a Greenfluencer, please reach out!

🌱 Issue #1 Green Flow Ence is here

TLDR*

(* Too Long Didn’t Read)

In a world where everything has been changing at a break-neck pace (so long Henry Cavill, your Geralt of Rivia shall be missed), let’s review some of the more recent developments in sustainability.

  • The International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) recently released their inaugural sustainability reporting standards. The idea was initially launched at COP26, and should be the first step to satisfy the global desire for a cohesive baseline for sustainability disclosures. (GreenBiz)

  • The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) has just released draft guidance protecting consumers from greenwashing. It consists of eight principles, and addresses conduct from the ACCC’s internet sweep of environmental claims (Lexology)

    • To learn more, on greenwashing, scroll to the bottom for this issue’s discussion in “Hot off the Press”.

  • Furthermore, a recent survey conducted by Possible and Mobium Group (“In Nature we Trust”) noted a shift in how younger Australians viewed their relationships with the natural world. They are rejecting the notion that the environment exists to service human needs, and are more supportive of prioritising the needs of the environment. (The Guardian)

HOT OFF THE PRESS - Greenwashing

- Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the greenest of them all? -

In this week’s issue of Green Flow Ence we’ll be giving a snap-shot on the issue of greenwashing, with a specific focus on the case against Mercer Super. Greenwashing as a concept can be viewed as a form of misrepresentation, wherein a company essentially tries to pass off something as being more sustainable than it actually is. An example of greenwashing in recent years would be the fact that some fast-fashion labels have tried to come out with sustainable or “eco-conscious” lines.

In the case against Mercer Super, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (aka ASIC) is alleging that their ‘Sustainable Plus’ made false and misleading statements as to the extent that the product was sustainable.

These statements marketed the Sustainable Plus options as suitable for members who ‘are deeply committed to sustainability’ because they excluded investments in companies involved in carbon intensive fossil fuels like thermal coal. Exclusions were also stated to apply to companies involved in alcohol production and gambling.

However, ASIC alleges members who took up the Sustainable Plus options had investments in companies involved in industries the website statements said were excluded.

If the court finds that ASIC’s allegations were true, this would be a landmark case for Australia. Not only would this be the first time that the investment watchdog launched a court action in relation to greenwashing conduct, but it would act as a landmark case that might signal to other companies that the age of greenwashing is coming to an end…
